Keywords optimization is one of those tedious tasks that you need to do in order to earn a better/higher position in Google SERPs (Search Engine Result Pages). Great articles could only get you so far, the rest depend on your keyword optimizing and marketing efforts. As you could read in my About page, I’m a film geek. So, I love to compare search engine keyword optimization to how movie production works. When you create a film for theatrical release(meaning: it’s not a DVD only film), you need to optimize your movie for cinema format. You do this by using the right cinema aspect ratio (2.39:1), sound format (5.1 Dolby), and resolution (4k). If you’re not following these rules, your film is considered lower than accepted standard and might not be shown in theaters. See how it relates so closely to search engine keywords optimization ^-^. Enough introduction, here are the 6 clever keywords optimization tricks worth knowing.
1. Go Broad, Before Go Deep

I learned this strategy from PPC guru, Amit Mehta. Yeah, it’s supposed to be used for PPC keywords optimization but it works good for SEO as well. Say you’re in the dog training niche and your root keyword is dog problems. Rather than doing the deep keyword research first, like most people, focus on finding broad keywords first. So, instead of having keywords that come from the same root keyword like severe dog problem, dog barking problem, dog peeing problem, etc, try to find related and lateral keywords. These keywords could be the synonym of the root keyword or different ways of saying it. In this dog problem example, some possible keywords are canine problem, puppy problem, doggy problem, hound problem, dog complication, puppy trouble, and many more. Use your Thesaurus, go to forums, or read other blogs to find these broad keywords.
2. Grab the Low Hanging Fruits

I guess this is one of the most overused phrase in SEO history, but it still needs to be mentioned. Low hanging fruits usually have these three characteristics. They are 3 words or more, have a decent monthly search volume (maybe about 1,000 searches/month), and have a low number of competitors (7,000 or less for exact match). So using the above dog training examples, your keywords could be dog barking problems, dog chewing problems, dog licking problems, dog not listening problems, etc. To learn more about keywords optimization and research for low hanging fruits, you could read my post, How I Write SEO Optimize Article in 45 Minutes or Less.
3. Find the Buyers’ Keywords

In my previous post, 5 Perpetual Laws of Search Engine Keyword Research, I talked a bit about finding buyers’ keywords. Using Microsoft OCI tool, you could estimate the possibility of of the readers purchasing the product you’re promoting, or opting-in to your mailing list. Another method that I find to be good at detecting commercial intention is to check Google and see how many sponsored links there are for particular keywords. My general rule is if there are 3 or more pages of sponsored links, the keywords have better chance to convert prospects into buyers.
4. Ask What Google Wants

Steven Clayton, the creator of Commission Blueprint, taught me this trick. Say, you want to be regarded as one of the authorities in your blogging niche by Google. Rather than having yourself wondering what keyword to optimize for, ask Google what they’re looking for. Simply find the authority sites in your niche in Google by typing the broadest possible keyword that define your niche. In this example, it’s “blogging”. Grab the URLs of the top two or three sites and put them, one by one, into Google Keyword Tool. You need to change the search method from Descriptive Words or Phrases to Website Content. Google will then present you the list of keywords they think that authority site is ranking for. Copy and use those keywords (choose one with 3 words or more) in your article, generate some backlinks, and enjoy the result.
5. Outrank Your Competition

The SEO strategy to out-perform your competitors is simple. You only need to have a more optimized article and more backlinks pointing to it than them. The two paid tools I used when it come to keyword optimizing and research are Traffic Travis and Keyword Elite 2.0. And since Traffic Travis is the only one with a free version available, I’ll just use it as an example for this post. Say, you’re optimizing for the term “make money blogging”. Using Traffic Travis SEO Analysis Tool, you can check the top 20 sites (sometimes less) that rank for that keyword in Google, complete with how many back links pointing to them, their PR rank, their optimization strategy, and other useful information. Using the data provided, you can start planning how to beat your competitors.
6. Use Different Venues

Is it possible to grab 7 spots out of the 10 spots available in Google’s first page? Yes. Internet marketing gurus, like Jeff Johnson and Howie Schwartz, have proved that it could be done. The pages appear in the Google’s first page might not be your site(s), but they are created by you and are there to bring massive amount of traffic to your site(s). To do this, you need to make use of different established sites and online marketing mediums. Article directories, like Ezine articles, have PR rank of 6 or higher. So, create keyword optimized articles for them and send a couple of backlinks to your articles in those directories. Do press releases, PDF marketing, Squidoo and Hub Pages marketing, and video marketing. By spreading your marketing effort, you’re able to rank in many different spots in Google SERPs. Just make sure you send backlinks to all of them. To learn more about driving traffic to your site using different marketing mediums, read 10 Worst Kept Secrets to Get Cheap Web Site Traffic.
