<p style="text-align: justify;">According to a Cambridge University study, watching uplifting clip from the Oprah Winfrey Show can make you a better person. As part of the study, 30 people watched an uplifting clip from the show and the other 30 people watched part of a nature documentary film.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">Afterwards, they were paid to write an essay on what they watched and asked if they would help with another study, this time without being paid. About 70 percent of the Oprah watchers agreed to the further study compared to only 40 percent of the doco viewers.</p>
<h2 style="text-align: justify;">Another Experiment</h2>
<p style="text-align: justify;">In his book, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1400063515?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=nintendowiisa-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=1400063515" target="_blank">The Black Swan</a>, Nassim Nicholas Taleb told us about one interesting experiment involving numbers. The participants of the experiment were asked to state their social security numbers before specifying any random numbers, from one to infinity. And guess what, all of the participants stated numbers that resemble their social security numbers.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">The <em>Oprah’s experiment</em> coupled with the case study from <em>The Black Swan</em> convinced me that we’re so easily manipulated by our surroundings, whether we’re aware of it or not. Of course, this can be both negative and positive. On one hand,  we might now feel very susceptible to product advertising and marketing in general.</p>
<h2 style="text-align: justify;">The Positive</h2>
<p style="text-align: justify;">But, on the other hand, we can use this knowledge to motivate ourselves and thus grow our online business, possibly by watching motivational videos and listening to motivational speeches. Because, if the above experiments are true, we’ll inevitably be motivated to take necessary actions to accomplish our goals.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">So, I guess it’s time to delete the songs in your iPod and substitute them with Anthony Robbins’ motivational audios. Yeah, and watch Oprah.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;"><em>Guess. Guess.</em> It’s not hidden or mysterious. Believe it or not, the ultimate trap of making money online that most of us have fallen into, at one time or another, is staring right at us. And yet, we can’t seem to notice it. So, what is it?</p>
<div style="text-align: justify;"><span id="more-924"></span></div>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>It’s information.</strong></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Information is a double-edged sword. We can’t dismiss it, as we need to know how to do something before we can actually do it. For example, we need to understand the concept of search engine optimization before we can optimize our site.</p>
<h2 style="text-align: justify;">The Pleasurable Trap</h2>
<p style="text-align: justify;">And yet, when we are presented with too much information, we somehow lose the will to act. We convinced ourselves that by having the knowledge, we are superior. And to be even better, we need more knowledge and so we try to find more information. We read the blogging tutorials, watch the list building videos, buy the product launch training course, and so on.</p>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<blockquote><p>We are trapped in, what I like to call, the <em>destructive information cycle (D.I.C)</em>.</p></blockquote>
</div>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Contrary to the norm, it is <em>pleasurable</em> to be in this <em><strong>trap</strong></em>. We don’t take any actions or do any work, and yet we feel better about ourselves.</p>
<h2 style="text-align: justify;">Dealing with D.I.C</h2>
<p style="text-align: justify;">But, if you are really serious about making money online, you’ll better get out of this <em>destructive information cycle</em>. And get out fast. As the longer you stay, the harder it is to succeed.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">The first step to get out of the <em>D.I.C</em> is to realize that you are in one. Just like drug or alcohol addicts admitting their addiction, we first need to admit that we’re addicted to information.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Then, it’s time to take some radical actions.</p>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<blockquote><p><strong>First</strong>, unsubscribe to all the mailing lists you’ve joined before and only subscribe to those that provide real values (not sales pitches) to you.</p>
<p><strong>Second</strong>, stop buying info products and learn from the ones you already have.</p>
<p><strong>Third</strong>, limit your blog and forum reading time to an hour or two a day.</p>
<p><strong>Fourth</strong>, take the first step. Be it writing your first blog post, creating your first video tutorial, or setting up your email auto-responder.</p></blockquote>
</div>
<p style="text-align: justify;">By doing the steps above, you should have more time and a less cluttered mind to start working toward your goals, be it making money online from blogging, affiliate marketing, or any other methods.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">We are all too familiar when this happens. We tell ourselves that we are making things perfect and that <em>it’s gonna be the best when it’s done</em>. But deep inside, we know that’s not true. What we are doing is just…</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Avoiding the possibility of Failure.</strong></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">We’ve been <em>brainwashed</em> with the <em>‘boy wonder’</em> success stories, perpetrated by the media . You know, the typical tale of how a man/woman from a small town and without any [insert the <em>field</em> they excel at] background is able to be a champion in their chosen field. The media had used this storyline for Tiger Woods (when he won his first major championship at the age of 21), Steven Spielberg (when he made his first blockbuster movie), and so many other successful people that it’s hard to list them all.</p>

<blockquote><p>And, we want to be this <em>‘boy wonder’</em>.</p></blockquote>

<p style="text-align: justify;">The problem is, by trying to be <em>them (perfect)</em>, we are not avoiding the possibility of failure. On the other hand, <strong>we are sabotaging ourselves from the possibility of success</strong>. <em>Who ever guess Google will be this profitable by providing ‘free’ search engine service for the masses? Who knows Facebook will get this big when there are tons of other social networking sites competing for the same market?</em> NOBODY.</p>
<h2 style="text-align: justify;">Learning From The Giants</h2>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Both Google and Facebook founders believe in their respective products, long before it was launched. So, they do what they do and succeed. But, does that mean it could have gone the other way and fail? Of course. But, that doesn’t stop them from trying.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">One thing that I find very useful to overcome the fear of failure is to think like software companies. Remember how long Gmail is in the <em>beta</em> phase? Google, one of the largest online company in the world, released an <em>imperfect(beta)</em> product before releasing its full version a year later.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Microsoft, one of the largest software company in the world, also did this by releasing the beta version of Windows 7 before launching the full version a few months later. The success of Gmail and Windows 7 is the result of continuous testing and tweaking at the <em>beta</em> phase of each products.</p>
<h2 style="text-align: justify;">Putting It Into Practice</h2>
<p style="text-align: justify;">To put this concept into a more practical sense, every time I get into the pattern of <em>negative what-ifs</em>, I always answered them with <em>“So what?”.</em> “What if this fail?”, “What if people don’t like it?”, “What if the conversion rate of this page is not high?”. “<em>So what? So what? and So what?” </em>I can tweak it later. I can reset the project. And I can modify it to fit my readers’ expectation.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">So, what can software companies teach you about success? Start today. Start blogging today. Start driving people to your squeeze page today. Then, if you are not satisfied with the outcome, tweak and modify them. Never be afraid of failure because you&#8217;ll always get the chance to fix it.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">Internet is the place where <em>the good,</em> <em>the bad, and the ugly</em> blend so well that it’s hard to separate them. You might’ve heard a piece of advice from a guru and, well, you believe him and do what he said. Hey, he’s a guru so he should be right, right? After a month, you discovered that his strategy is not working for you. So, you searched online to see how it’s working for others and found an article by another guru that’s an exact opposite of what the other one is saying. It’s also very easy to get caught in online scams because we’re desperate. See the recent <em>açaí </em>berry flogs (fake blogs) issue that send hundreds of <em>internet marketers</em> crying in unity as their Google quality score drops and FTC taking their websites down. So, to avoid some of the more widespread <em>dumb</em> advice, I compiled this list of 9 worst internet marketing advice ever given.</p>
<h3 style="text-align: justify;"><span id="more-513"></span>1. Use Fake Scarcity</h3>

<p style="text-align: justify;">Scarcity creates a sense of urgency and exclusivity and thus it’s a very effective selling tool. But the problem is, dishonest internet marketers, who just want to make quick bucks, use what I called <em>fake scarcity</em>. Fake scarcity doesn’t mean limiting the number of products being sold when you can actually sell more. They are digital  products, like eBooks or videos, anyway, how can they ever sold out? <em>Fake scarcity</em> refers to when the products is said to be limited to a certain number of people, like 200, but is sold to more than that amount, maybe to 400 people. It’s just deceptive marketing that shouldn’t have exist and it makes me angry just thinking about it.</p>
<h3 style="text-align: justify;">2. Avoid PPC, You’ll Lose Big Dollars</h3>

Sure, those are big names gurus. But even if you’re a newbie, you can use PPC to your benefits. The key is to do your PPC keyword research properly and to track and tweak your campaigns based on their performances. So, say whatever you want, but the fact is, article marketing is alive and well.</p>
<h3 style="text-align: justify;">8. Highest ClickBank &#8216;Gravity&#8217; Equals to Highest Conversion and Sales</h3>

After doing months of SEO and article marketing works, they only made a couple of sales. They lose more time and money than they’ve gain. The solution is to test the market by doing PPC advertising first before performing months of SEO, link building, article marketing , and other optimization works.</p>

If you’ve never tried the affiliate products you’re promoting before, don’t write in your blog as if you have. Testimonials are a means to build credibility through social proof. Faking and building credibility aren&#8217;t compatible.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">Yesterday, I received an email from one of the internet marketing mailing lists I subscribed to. The email asked me to visit and opt-in to the<em> Yanik Silver’s Underground Seminar</em> in order to watch the presentation by Tony Hsieh, <em>CEO of <a href="http://www.zappos.com/" target="_blank">Zappos.com</a></em>. For those who don’t know, Zappos is a shopping site, similar to Amazon, with a focus on shoes, clothing, and other apparels. The video lasted for a total of 75 minutes, divided into a 40 minutes presentation section and another 35 minutes Q&amp;A. I really enjoyed the whole video as Tony revealed his philosophies and strategies on running his 1 billion dollar business. So, here are the 5 things that I learned from Tony Hsieh.</p>
<h3 style="text-align: justify;"><span id="more-449"></span>1. Have a vision</h3>

<p style="text-align: justify;">Tony is a big believer in having a grand vision and big dreams. He built Zappos from the ground up, thinking bigger every time he hit the goals. He also believed that you should be chasing your vision, instead of money or any sort of monetary rewards. If you focused on the money, you’ll quit when the tough times come. But if you focused on chasing your vision, the money will come to you.</p>
<h3 style="text-align: justify;">2. Be True to Your Brand</h3>

<p style="text-align: justify;">Zappos stands for great customer service. Every new employees, no matter what position they are in, have to join this 5 weeks compulsory customer loyalty training, where they’ll work at Zappos’ call centers and warehouses. The focus on customer service is also apparent when you use their site to shop. The 1-800 numbers are located at the top page in every single page in their site. They also have the 24 hour warehouse to ensure faster delivery, free shipping and return shipping, and 365 days return policy.</p>
<h3 style="text-align: justify;">3. Focus on Repeat Customers</h3>

<p style="text-align: justify;">Zappos focus most of their efforts on maintaining current customers rather than finding new ones. Meaning that Tony and his team never counts the one-time transaction value, but the lifetime value of customers. And the lifetime value of Zappos customers is pretty damn high, as much as $500 per customers. Repeat customers spend more and complaint less because they already know what they could expect from you or your site. So, as suggested by Tony, find the formula to get your customers come back again and again, and you’ll be set.</p>
<h3 style="text-align: justify;">4. Focus on People</h3>

<p style="text-align: justify;">When you just started, you probably need to do everything by yourself because you don’t have the money to hire anyone. But as your business grows, you’ll need to start hiring employees. The hiring process in Zappos is not straight forward at all because it’s not only about hiring a guy with the right skill sets for the job. Through the <em>5 weeks customer loyalty training</em> I’ve mentioned above, each new employees are tested if they could fit into the Zappos’ working environment that focus on exceptional customer service. If they fail to meet expectation, they’ll be fired, even though their actual position doesn’t require them to work in call centers or warehouses at all.</p>
<h3 style="text-align: justify;">5. Create and Commit to Core Values</h3>

<p style="text-align: justify;">Core values are what the people working in the company, from the lowest positions to CEO, believe the company stands for. Zappos have this <em>culture book</em> that contains employees’ thought on what the company currently stands for. This <em>culture book</em> is updated every year and contains the ten Zappos’ core values. Some of them are <em>embrace and drive change, deliver wow through service, pursue growth and learning, and do more with less</em>. These core values are not just words written on a piece of paper. They act as principles and guidelines when decisions, no matter how minor or negligible they are, have to be made.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Here are the 5 lessons on brand and business building I learned from Tony Hsieh, CEO of Zappos.com. I want to put the link to the presentation video here but I can’t seem to find the URL anymore (I think they replaced it with a sales page). Although this post only represents less than half of what Tony talked about, I am hopeful that you could learn and implement them in your online business. <p style="text-align: justify;">I change my sleeping habit three weeks ago to have more time to write for this blog. I started to sleep at 11 pm and wake up at 6 am in the morning. At first, it’s very hard, I feel cranky every time I woke up. But after the first week, I started to feel better. And today, I could declare that I feel so much better now compared to the time when I have the 3 am –10 am sleeping time. The purpose of this post is to persuade you to also adopt this healthier sleeping habit. Here are the 5 reasons why you should sleep, wake up early and start blogging  starting tomorrow.</p>
<h3 style="text-align: justify;"><span id="more-418"></span>1. Prevent Diseases</h3>

<p style="text-align: justify;">According to the research done by National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, sleeping early could prevent you from liver disease. This is because the detoxification process in our livers occur from 11.00pm till 01.00am. This process will be optimal when we are sleeping deeply. The process of detoxification also occur in our lymph glands from 9 pm till 11pm. If someone still works during 9.00pm till 11.00 continuously, it will bring negative impact to his/her health. Additionally, in the morning, from 7.00am till 09.00 am our intestines absorb nutrient from food. So, we should have breakfast around this time. In short, sleeping early makes us healthier.</p>
<h3 style="text-align: justify;">2. More productive</h3>

<p style="text-align: justify;">Some of you probably have known that sleeping early allow us to have a longer deep sleep. So, for example, if we sleep at 3 am and the sun shines at 7 am, we’ll only have about 4 hours of deep sleep. That definitely is not enough, as the recommended adult sleeping length is 7 hours. But, if we sleep from 11 pm till 6 am, we’ll have more than enough deep sleep. Taking a nap in the afternoon is no substitute for good night sleep. Without enough sleeping in the night we lose our ability to concentrate and make complex decisions, cope with stress, or our ability to think creatively or responds quickly.</p>
<h3 style="text-align: justify;">3. Have More Time Online to Browse for Ideas</h3>

<p style="text-align: justify;">Waking up early in the morning gives you more time to research on your topic, especially if you’re doing blogging part-time and have another full-time job. I usually start my morning by browsing <em>ProBlogger, Shoemoney, John Chow</em> and a couple other blogs to scan their new posts. I’ll also check the two largest internet marketing forums, the Warriors Forum and Digital Point Forum, to see what topic is on demand and to find inspiration on what to write. Then, I would choose a topic and perform an even more in-depth research. I always try to finish my blog post before 9 am because I need to shift my focus to my affiliate sites at 10 am. I would then schedule it to be posted later.</p>
<h3 style="text-align: justify;">4. Write Fresher</h3>

<p style="text-align: justify;">For those people who are doing blogging part-time, it’s always better to write the blog post before you start working (your full-time job) so that what happen at work later won’t affect your writing. Imagine, if something bad happen to you in the office, do you still have the motivation to write…? Probably not. Sleeping and waking up early also invigorates your brain and body, so you’ll be able to write your topic from a fresher perspective.</p>
<h3 style="text-align: justify;">5.   Feel better</h3>

<p style="text-align: justify;">As we grow older, we break our pattern of sleeping and waking up early we gained from our school years, because we’re linking pain into it. (<em>Why can’t school start at 11?</em>) So, to change that, we just need to link more pleasurable things with waking up in the morning (maybe by<em> thinking of blogging + $$</em>). You’ll be able to wake up early, and feel better in no time. You’ll also feel satisfied and proud of yourself for being able to wake up before everyone else <em>(or so you think…)</em> and that’s good.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">Blogging about the topic you’re passionate about is fulfilling. It could even give you<em> financial freedom</em> if you managed to properly monetize it, as many blogging gurus, like John Chow or Darren Rowse, do. But, as you might realize, it’s not for everyone. Some people just don’t have enough motivation to do it. They are interested for a while, probably for about a week or two, but then their drive halted and they threw away the possibility of blogging for money. Anthony Robbins, my favorite personal development guru, mentioned that all of our actions are based on our needs to avoid pains and obtain pleasures. In order to become highly successful bloggers, you need to control, and consciously selected, what gives you pain and what gives you pleasure, until your new understandings become your habits. These are the 8 habits of highly successful bloggers.</p>
<h3 style="text-align: justify;"><span id="more-345"></span>1. Set Goals</h3>

<p style="text-align: justify;">Highly successful bloggers are able to manage their time properly by creating a short-term and long-term goals. Short-term goals could be something that you need to achieve in a couple of minutes to something that you need to get done in a couple of days. Some examples of short-term goals are half-an hour article research, 2 hours article writing, or maybe 1 day recording and editing videos (if you are doing video blogging or video tutorials), etc. Successful bloggers are also able to manage their long term deadlines properly by setting up goals that they have to meet in the near and far future. These goals could be traffic goals (<em>I must have 1,0000 visitors by next month</em>), subscription goals(<em>I must have 200 subscribers by next month</em>), or many others.</p>
<h3 style="text-align: justify;">2. Never Stop Learning</h3>

<p style="text-align: justify;">Successful bloggers never stop learning, whether from other bloggers in their niche or their surroundings. They are interested in expanding their general knowledge, things that happen around the world and have their own personal take on them. They are also consistently interested in obtaining specific knowledge (information) about the topic they are blogging about. By combining those two interests together, they are able to create blog posts that are accessible (as they use real world examples and situations) and informative (as the bloggers have a deep knowledge of the niche).</p>
<h3 style="text-align: justify;">3. Stay Motivated</h3>

<p style="text-align: justify;">Bloggers who are highly successful train themselves to be extremely motivated throughout the day. How do they do that? They change their physiology (body posture). They sit upwards as if they are the most successful person in the whole world. They smiled with confidence when they are faced with difficulties, problems, or even failures because they believed no matter what the result is, they could learned something from it. They use <em>carrot-and-stick </em>to motivate themselves, by thinking of what pleasure they would obtain if they blog (or finish other important tasks) and what are the dreadful things that would happen to them if they don’t take the actions. Or as Anthony Robbins put it, <em>they get leverage on themselves</em>.</p>
<h3 style="text-align: justify;">4. Active in the community</h3>

<p style="text-align: justify;">The most successful bloggers spend their time socializing and building relationship with other bloggers, their readers and subscribers. They feel compelled to comment on someone else’s blogs, with comments that further the discussions or expanding the actual blog posts. They are active in forums, helping others if they are able to, or just talk about things they are passionate about. They are also readily available, replying to emails from their subscribers or readers.</p>
<h3 style="text-align: justify;">5. Make schedules</h3>

<p style="text-align: justify;">Highly successful bloggers understand the power of time management and discipline. So they create schedules that fit their needs and follow them daily. They don’t want to waste their time browsing the internet or watching some random YouTube videos. The schedules could be written on a notebook or printed on a piece of paper, it doesn’t matter. What matter is the schedule allow them to organize their day to be as productive as they possibly can. They know what task need to be finished in that day and how to do it in a step-by-step manners. Making your own schedule is extremely important as it creates discipline and habits that would turn you into a more successful blogger.</p>
<h3 style="text-align: justify;">6. Strive to be Unique</h3>

<p style="text-align: justify;">Successful bloggers spend each of their waking hours to be different than the rest of the crowds. They don’t want their blogs to be what the CEO of Acer, <em>Stan Shih</em>, called <strong>‘me too’</strong> blogs. The positioning of your blog is affecting your authority and credibility in the niche you’re in. You have to be regarded as the expert in your field in order to properly monetize your blog. Just look at Darren Rowse who is the authority when it comes to blogging advices with his ProBlogger blog, or Leo Baubata, with his Zen Habits blog, when it comes to productivity. All the best blogs in the world focus their efforts on a particular niche. So strive to be different.</p>
<h3 style="text-align: justify;">7. Understand their Readers</h3>

They understand their demographic and  took notice of what might offend them. They post articles, videos, podcasts, or tutorials that corresponds directly to what their readers want. Those readers who are happy with the consistent quality of the posts would turn into subscribers of the blog, and then into loyal fans.</p>
<h3 style="text-align: justify;">8.Market Your Article</h3>

They are not the type who wait and hope for good things to come to them (“<em>Oh hopefully someone Tweet or Digg my post”</em>).Instead, they would go and reach for what they want, which in this case mean higher traffic volume and more subscribers. They do whatever it takes to market their articles, be it using Twitter, Digg, Stumble Upon, video marketing, article marketing, so that more and more people could enjoy their writings. And thus helping their blogs to gain popularity and traffic that they need.</p>
